My Italian Carry-On Challenge, Part 1

Nordstrom Carry-On Suitcases // Jumpsuit, old (IDENTICAL VERSION HERE) // Straw Fedora: Halogen // Sneakers: Golden Goose // Belt Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

Every time I mention that I *typically* am a “carry-on” girl, people are generally shocked.

WHAT?! Do I look THAT high maintenance?! Do I seem like the type of gal who schleps along a billion outfit changes and wardrobe options for one weekend getaway? Or do I seem so completely frazzled and unorganized that there’s absolutely no way in hell that I could be able to pull off something so impressive?!

And even though I don’t really know how I stumbled upon this freakish ability to be able to carry-on, it’s something I wear like a badge of honor! You might remember THIS BLOG POST back in the spring where I shared how I fit 8 days worth of outfits into just one suitcase….well, now I am headed to Italy for 17 days and I have decided to kick it up a notch…

…well, sort of.

So initially I was 100% dedicated to taking ONE CARRY-ON SUITCASE and ONE TOTE BAG. That was it. I was gonna mix & match my heart out and outfit plan the hell outta that suitcase. Well, long story short, I FAILED. Once I began the planning process, I just couldn’t decide which outfits to leave behind. I then flipped the switch and decided to just say “SCREW IT” and check a bag. But even before I could pull my big suitcase out of storage, my anxiety got the best of me and I thought to myself, “WHAT IF MY ONLY CLOTHING SUITCASE GETS LOST?!” That would really put a major damper on my entire Italian outfit vibe.

So here we are: 2 carry-on suitcases. And before you get all judgmental & ask all the questions, lemme explain myself. During my planning process it quickly became apparent to me that I had 2 completely different color schemes happening….one was full of bright colors and one was full of black & white with splashes of red. And once that became apparent to me, I made the executive decision to do one suitcase with each color theme! The first one with colors would come with me on the plane…that way I would 100% have clothes the first leg of the trip. The black & white suitcase would get checked (heaven forbid it got lost for a couple days, well, I don’t need it till Day 8 anyway?). Once I fully committed to this plan, everything else kind of fell into place!

Except there was one underlying issue that I didn’t realize/remember until about a week ago: My black carry-on suitcase had a broken wheel and my white carry-on cracked when we went to Mexico. OF COURSE. OF FREAKING COURSE. (And I thought the outfit planning was gonna be the most dramatic part of packing?!)

After a small meltdown, I drove to the mall to see what my options were. And then there it was….I had finally come face to face with something I had tried so hard to avoid…..THE NORDSTROM ANNIVERSARY SALE. And in a blink of an eye I was suddenly singing it’s praises! I had an AH-HA moment and realized that this was the exact type of situation that makes me appreciate this sale….something YOU NEED when something IS ON SALE. And just like that, I found 2 carry-on suitcases (pink and adorable, nonetheless! They also come in black, FYI.) for 35% OFF and I marched my happy little ass to the cash register & had my FIRST NORDSTROM ANNIVERSARY SALE MOMENT OF 2019! Never say never, right?!

So, today I am hopping on a flight to Italy with my brand new Nordstrom Anniversary Sale suitcases, and I must say that I am feeling pretty good about this decision! During my trip I am going to precisely document what I wear, what I wear twice, what I don’t wear at all, and what I wished I would’ve packed and that will make up Part 2 of this Italian Carry-On Challenge!

*Thank you to Nordstrom for partnering on this post and saving the day with your Anniversary Sale!

I’m leaving for Italy next month for 8 days and I’m equally committed to a carry-on and a backpack. I’m so excited to see your suggestions, inspire me!! And enjoy!!

I feel like your carry-ons hold so much more/is more efficient than a standard large bottom and small flap carry on (I hope that makes sense), do you find that to be the case?

  • Lauren

Oooh that rose bag! Is it for toiletries?! Mama likiiiie.

Im late! I hope you are enjoying your trip. I spent a summer in Italy in 2017. I needed this! I took entirely too much. Also I did a lot of shopping and had to mail packages home. Horrible planning on my part but had a great time.
