My 80/20 Approach to Fitness & Dieting

Let’s just go ahead and be honest here: No one is really ever going to look at me as the expert of fitness & dieting.

Do I like to workout? YES. Do I try to “diet?” EH, SORTOF. Do I like to indulge in great food & wine? ABSOLUTELY.

So when it comes to my lifestyle and finding some sort of balance, I try to follow the 80/20 rule: 80% of the time, I workout 5x a week & eat VERY CLEAN. Let’s break this down specifically, though:

-5x a week workouts: 2-3 of those are with a trainer doing a combination of weight training, cardio endurance, stretching, & boxing. The other days are either SoulCycle spin classes or 3 mile walks. Either way, I am SERIOUSLY SWEATING 5 days a week.

-VERY CLEAN EATING: I stick to lean protein, fruits, and vegetables. I also watch portion control and do not eat snacks. Three meals a day…period. No dairy. No sugar (except natural sugars, like fruit). No carbs (like fours, wheat, potatoes…but I do eat carbs that come from veggies. No wine, only clear cocktails like vodka/sparkling water or NO ALCOHOL AT ALL. 100 ounces of water per day and no eating after 7pm.

I know that sounds difficult….ummm, it is….but I look at it as “Work hard, Play harder.” There’s the 20% that is ALOT OF FUN, and during that time, I don’t limit myself on what I can and can’t eat. Typically if I am traveling for fun, I am in the 20%. If I am home working during the week or during a weekend that nothing is going on, I am in the 80%. What I like about this type of balance is that it allows me to cater my workouts and diets to my busy lifestyle, all while not depriving myself on anything that I want to enjoy! And if I really wanted to, I could go hardcore and lose those 10 pounds that I didn’t have 7 years ago, but you know what….I earned those 10 pounds! To me, they are from experiences, vacations, and incredible meals that I got to enjoy with friends!

    I’m 55 and need to make a change. Obviously I’m old enough to be your mother but still enjoy your style and life. Obsessed with your teeth. You kindly answered they were your not veneers. How does one keep them soooooo white.
