How to Shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale LIKE A BOSS

So unless you’ve been living under a rock, chances are you’ve heard every blogger namedrop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which opened to cardholders yesterday (opens to the public July 20)! Last year, I wrote a colorful blog post HERE about my frustration with this sale, my annoyance with this sale, and my confusion as to WHY EVERYONE FLIPS THEIR SHIT FOR THIS SALE.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good sale just like anyone else. I grew up somewhat rags to riches, so up until about 12 or so, I was quite comfortable and confident perusing the sale racks. But the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale isn’t really a “sale rack” situation. Allow me to break it all down for you…with some candor, some honestly, and possibly a curse word, or two.

WHAT IS THE NORDSTROM ANNIVERSARY SALE? Today, Nordstrom welcomed LOADS of new fall merchandise that hasn’t been available to be shopped until NOW…but the product is discounted about 30-40%. From today until July 19, Nordstrom cardholders can shop the sale early, and then from July 20-August 5, the sale is open to the general public. But here’s the catch: prices return to the original amount on August 6.

HOW DO I NAVIGATE THE SALE? Basically, I feel like everyone needs to calm the fuck down. You will hear TONS of bloggers say “HURRY AND BOY NOW BECAUSE EVERYTHING WILL SELL OUT!” Here’s the deal: everything does sell out, but they re-stock it once the sale opens to the public. Life continues. We all move on. I’m not going to bend over backwards for a cheap dress. I’m not going to bend over backwards for pleather mules. And I’m certainly not going to bend over backwards for trend items that will fall apart in 6 months. BUT I WILL BEND OVER for 3 specific categories. See my justification below!

ALREADY IN MY CLOSET: Quite often, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has a few top sellers in the mix…and I must admit, it’s always a pleasant surprise to see items that are already in my closet from last year! Not only is it a reminder that I picked out a great item, but it always tempts me to buy another or a different color! (Click on each item title to shop or scroll through below!)

Rag & Bone Simone Pants with Laces: $325 // SALE $216.90 // I have these in navy AND black…only difference is that mine don’t have the ties on the bottom. See how I styled them HERE & HERE.

Jeffrey Campbell Coma Stretch Bootie: $124,95 // SALE $82.90 // In a totally compulsive moment, I bought these last year in plaid…and STILL haven’t worn them because, honestly, I don’t think I’m cool enough for them?!

Steve Madden Reese Sock Bootie: $129.95 // SALE $86.90 // 100% purchasing another pair of these in black.

Rag & Bone Raw Hem Skinny Jean: $195 // SALE: $129.90 // Can a girl ever have too many pairs of jeans?!

Adidas Edge Lux Clima Running Sneakers: $85 // SALE $63.90 // I’ve got these in black & lavender & love them for running…especially if you have a narrow foot!

INVESTMENT PIECES: For me, this is really where it’s at when it comes to shopping this sale. Whether it’s classics like cashmere wraps, black blazers, or camel coats, or boots & booties that you’ll wear all winter & fall, this is the perfect time to justify these larger purchases. It’s also a perfect time to implement the motto, “BUY NOW, WEAR LATER.” I mean, you’ll have to buy these items eventually, right?! (Click on each item title to shop or scroll through below!)

Halogen Long Cashmere Cardigan (in Regular & Petite): $299 // SALE $199 // Two hundred bucks for cashmere IS A STEAL!

Badgley Mischka Double Face Wool Wrap Coat (in Regular & Petite): $349 // SALE $229.90 // An item almost identical to this was on the sale last year and I kicked myself for not buying it all winter long.

Marc Fisher Miggi Booties: $188.95 // SALE $124.90 // I AM BUYING THESE IN WHITE AND NO ONE CAN STOP ME.

Lewit Leather Moto Jacket: $749 // SALE $449.90 // Leather jackets are a staple in my fall & winter wardrobe, so an item like this pays for itself if you were to average it out in “cost per wear!”

Stuart Weitzman Layfayette Slouch Boot: $775 // SALE $489.90 // Buy now, wear forever.

J.Crew Dover Blazer (in Regular & Petite): $198 // SALE: $131.90 // Perfect for the corporate gal, or layer with jeans & heels for a night out!

Nordstrom 2-pc Luggage Set (29in. & 20in.): $299 // SALE: $223.90 // If you are a avid traveler, you totally understand the value in this set!

Vince Camuto Movinta Bootie: $149.95 // SALE $99.90 // Really wanted a “cone” shaped heel bootie last year, but neber

BEAUTY ITEMS TO STOCK UP ON: Tons of my regularly used items go on sale in bulk, so this a great time to stock up! Also, higher priced items like brushes, sets, & makeup tools TYPICALLY get marked down during this sale!  (Click each item title to shop or scroll through below!)

MAC Nude Lip Trio: $54.50 // SALE $36.60 // I bought this last year & LOVE IT!

Trish McEvoy 8pc. Brush Set with Leather Case: $315.50 // SALE: $185.00 // It can be VERY EXPENSIVE to build a quality cosmetic brush collection, and considering Trish is known for hers, THIS IS A GREAT DEAL. (Fun Fact: I bought my VERY first foundation brush when I was 21 years old at a Trish McEvoy counter!)

GloPRO Microneedling Tool for the face & eyes: $269 // SALE: $169 // If you care about the future of your skin but can’t justify paying for regular treatments at a dermatologist, this is the next best thing you can do….but for WAY LESS MONEY.

La Mer Collection including creme, oil, eye treatment, & concentrate: $469 // SALE: $330 // WORTH. EVERY. PENNY.

Supergoop! Set of 5 SPF50 Mist: $57 // SALE $38 // No vacation is complete without having this packed in your suitcase.

If you aren’t a Nordstrom cardholder, SERIOUSLY DO NOT PANIC….there will still be plenty for you to choose from when the sale opens to the public on the 20th. AND IF IT SELLS OUT, THEY WILL RESTOCK IT.

FYI: I’m not eve a cardholder, so I won’t be shopping till next week, either!

And once everything is fair game and we can all shop this together, I will be doing a post of WHAT I ACTUALLY PURCHASED & KEPT!

Thanks Courtney for being REAL about the sale. I was fulling the pressure to get a credit card.

  • Shana

Girl … thank you for keeping it real. You made very good points.

  • Francine

OMG, you just articulated what I’ve been growling about the last week. I swear, if I read/listen/watch another post about that damn Barefoot Dreams cardigan – and how my life will not be complete without it – I will lose it. Who the hell wants something that literally ONE MILLION people will wear.

Kudos to keeping it real and in perspective!

Also recommend stocking up on Hanky Panky, they are all I wear and the low rise thong is on sale for 4 for $59 – I’m buying 8 pairs.

  • Maria

  • Crystal
