Foundation vs. Masks: My Thoughts & Discoveries

Every woman has the same issue she’s dealing with right now: MASKS….and what they are doing to our skin! Are they wreaking havoc on yours too?!

While wearing masks are part of our new normal as we keep ourself & those around us safe, they have begun to raise a handful of issues when it comes to our skin. The term “MASK-NE,” otherwise known as MASK ACNE, has been coined, and perhaps its even been a problem for you?! Well, masks are here to stay for now, so our best bet is to figure out how to navigate around them!

Personally, my biggest challenge is how the mask affects my makeup underneath. While I love a glowy, luminous foundation finish, that’s not really ideal when it comes to putting on & taking off a mask several times a day. So after lots of trial and error, I’ve realized that for masks & makeup, there are a couple of non-negotiable requirements: must be long wearing, must be oil free, & must be fragrance free! Long wearing helps with keeping it transfer resistant onto my mask, oil free helps with preventing breakouts underneath the mask, & fragrance free will reduce additional irritation!

After sorting through the hundreds of suggestions y’all sent me on Instagram stories and assessing all the ingredients & figuring out which one would work for my skin type, I finally settled on the Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear in shade 260 Bisque N, which is available at Sephora! Before I even swatch tested it, this foundation had already checked so many of the required boxes: Long-wearing? Yep, it lasts up to 24 hours! And oil free? The finish is velvety-matte & recommended for ALL skin types!

But once I got it home and played with the product, THAT’S WHERE THE REAL MAKEUP MAGIC HAPPENED! I’m not really sure what my expectations were, but since the Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear lasts up to 24 hours, I expected the texture & finish to be much thicker than the products I am used to. Boy was I surprised when the consistency was so much more of a delicate, natural finish! Another pleasant surprise was to see how buildable it was….meaning, even though its full coverage, I could layer less or more in certain areas, where needed!

HOT TIPS & TRICKS: I actually layered the foundation on top of the oil-free Lancôme La Base Pro Perfecting Makeup Primer, which prepped my skin by blurring all the imperfections and allowing the Teint Idole Ultra Wear to blend much better! Also, instead of using a brush or a blending sponge, I used my fingertips to warm up the foundation and then did a “dabbing” technique by pressing and patting it into my skin! You can see these HOT TIPS in action by watching THIS IGTV, where I am sharing the application of this foundation!

So, let’s recap: When it comes to wearing a mask, what do we need to be wearing underneath? MATTE…to keep it from transferring. OIL-FREE…to keep sweaty skin from getting congested & breaking out. LONG WEARING….to ensure that we look our best after putting on and taking off our mask all day!

I’m loving the IT Cosmetics CC Matte. Wore it all day in Disney last weekend. No transfer! And I cannot even explain how hot it was or how much I sweat

I’m skip foundation in mask zone! Also, mascara…. the steam up from 9 hours of mask wearing gives me raccoon eyes. I can’t do waterproof so sans is the way to go.

Thank you for this post!! I purchased the foundation, it is the best I have used in awhile. It works so well during this face mask wearing time. I love how clear and smooth your complexion is, a little goes a long way. BTW, let be that nail color!
